Unique

BIOS

Unique was created by four ladies from Main Street Sound, York's Ladies Barbershop Chorus. After our first rehearsal it was clear that we had something special. It's been an absolute thrill singing together and we have a lot of fun too!

Read our individual bios below...and come see us perform at our next festival!

Lynette Austin, Tenor

Netty joined Main Street Sound 16 years ago when it was still called Harmony Days. After two years as a lead, her wish to become a tenor was granted and she has been section leader for the last 6 years. Netty's musical background is in classical pianoforte and singing opera. She has sung bass, lead, and tenor in convention having nearly 3 octaves range to draw upon. Netty is very excited that she has been invited to join such a new and enthusiastic quartet who share her passion for all things barbershop.

Karen Whitworth, Baritone

Karen has been singing barbershop since being introduced to it by her father at the age of 15. Karen has gone on to be involved in many groups, including winning a bronze medal at LABBS with Bradford based chorus, Pennine Chimes (along with her mother). She was then also lucky enough to win a bronze medal at LABBS in 1994 with her quartet 'Live Coverage' and go on to win a European gold with them the following year!

Together with her husband and father, Karen sings in a mixed quartet 'Delekate'. Karen, Les, and Terry are all co directors of 'Main Street Sound' ladies chorus from York and have been for nearly six years now. She is excited to be singing baritone with the newly formed quartet 'Unique ' as 20 years without a female quartet is far too long!

Grace Baird, Lead

Grace is an expat from America (New York City to be exact). She moved from New York to Old York to work on Network Rail projects as an Overhead Line Engineer. But looking for something to do outside of work Grace found Mainstreet Sound, ladies barbershop chorus!

Grace had always wanted to sing in an a capella group but never found the time in New York. Harmonising at loud volumes is her idea of fun! So after joining Mainstreet Sound, Grace joined Unique with three other ladies from Mainstreet Sound to have a go at barbershop quartet singing. It's been an amazing experience, both entertaining and challenging.

Karen Frodsham, Bass

Karen was introduced to barbershop by a friend who sang with Main Street Sound just over four years ago. It took her several months to settle into a new genre for singing and has grown to love the style that is uniquely barbershop! She sings with Main Street Sound chorus in the bass section and loves singing with an amazing group of ladies. Karen was also part of Rainbow Rhythm quartet for three years. She loves singing with ‘Unique’ a newly formed quartet, we work hard and laugh so much.
